Low Blood Sugar (Hypoglycemia) Treatment

Call 911 if:

  • A person who has low blood sugar not related to diabetes loses consciousness.

1. Raise Blood Sugar Level

Give the person a high-sugar food such as:

  • ½ cup fruit juice
  • 5 hard candies
  • 3 glucose tablets

Then follow with a more substantial food like a sandwich that offers protein, fat, and complex carbohydrates.

2. Follow Up

  • If non-diabetic hypoglycemia is recurrent, see a health care provider. The health care provider will do tests to help determine the cause.
