Infection in a lump or swollen gland

Most lumps are not caused by infection and do not become infected. But painful lumps can be a sign of infection, especially if other symptoms are also present.

  • Increased pain, swelling, redness, or warmth around the affected area.
  • Red streaks extending away from the affected area.
  • Pus draining from the area.
  • Fever or chills.
