Infection in a lump or swollen gland
Most lumps are not caused by infection and do not become infected. But painful lumps can be a sign of infection, especially if other symptoms are also present.
Signs of infection may include:
Body temperature above 103° F Rapid pulse Reduced sweating Disorientation Unconsciousness Seizures Warm, red, dry skin

- Increased pain, swelling, redness, or warmth around the affected area.
- Red streaks extending away from the affected area.
- Pus draining from the area.
- Fever or chills.
